Avril Lavigne - Acoustic Set + Interviews (CTV's Canada AM) [5.31.04]

Avril appears on CTV's Canada AM to promote and perform. Her sophomore album Under My Skin, had just been released the previous week.

Avril first talks with the show hosts. She is fairly animated this morning and exercises some fun and funky facial expressions (see post avatar). That's what you get when you dare bring up the subject of the doubting of Avril's songwriting skills. You betta respek!

Back at this time there is lots of Avril gushing over her then songwriting partner, Chantal Kreviazuk. Of course, later on Chantal shan't tell the world that Avril even knows the first thing about writing. Anyway, it's a sweet pain for me to listen to Avril speak so highly of someone who means so very much to her then, knowing that that person will end up being so very mean to her later on. Ooh, ouch.

After about a half-hour break, Avril returns to play with Evan on 'Don't Tell Me.' Following another fifteen minute break, the TV show comes back around to her again and this time for good. It's Morning Has Broken Wide Open With Weird Avril TV!

Avril and Evan offer up 'He Wasn't.' Then Av steps to the front of the stage to take questions from, and even see a performance by, some kids in the audience. Av almost falls off her high-heeled shoes that she had tried unsuccessfully to hide under her long pants. Everyone has a good laugh with her near-scare. Av and Ev then close out the program in style, with 'My Happy Ending' and 'Sk8er Boi.'

The girl can't hide it anymore: She's a lady!

Whipping back around to this post, the video picture is very good here but does have a rolling news feed at the bottom. The sound on 'Don't Tell Me' is unfortunately a bit distorted. It is tinny so a boost to the bass might help a bit. But for the rest of the musical selections, the audio is quite good. As for the performances...

IMHO the highlight here is MHE. Av and Ev do this great guitar-part together. Maybe they've done it before like this on video, but if so, not so well that I've noticed. At the end of the bridge (@ 2:55), Avril continues singing on but stops strumming while Evan continues playing. Then he stops and she starts. And then she stops for a moment and they both begin again. The timing is just exquisite.

In addition, there are all these very young girls in the audience, and Avril does the 'all the shit that you do' unedited version. And guess what? Not one prepubescent head exploded. Avril and Canada rocks! And the USA sucks. America don't allow 'shit' on TV! Well, except for only very recently, and only very late at night, and only when it's whispered. There has been some progress made. But if Avril ever pulled that 'shit' on an American morning show in front of a crowd of little girls, the moral majority would have her head on a spit. "Don't try to tell me what to do/ Don't try to tell me what to say..." Oh, they will! Dear Goddess, I hate censor-shit. So I just have to love this performance.
