Mini-review: Following the promo tour for her second album 'Under My Skin,' Avril began the 2004 tour proper. Called the 'Bonez Tour 2004-Eyes,' or just 'Bonez Tour,' because said Avril, "it's what's under my skin - ha ha." The 'Bonez Tour' opened in Munich, Germany, on September 26. The next day Avril arrived to play Düsseldorf for the very first time. It also happened to be her 20th birthday.
Just before 'Take Me Away,' some in the crowd start singing something, but the band had already started their own song and so they roll with it. Before 'Unwanted,' the crowd start singing again, but again the band runs over them. Finally, following 'Unwanted,' there's a pause in the musical action, and the crowd sings clearly, 'Happy Birthday To You!' Avril replies, "So sweet!" Then she laughs. Av gives thanks for all the 'Happy Birthday' signs in the crowd. She reveals she had never before played on her birthday. Her conclusion: "Pretty cool." It's a touching moment in a special show. Later on between songs, the audience keeps on serenading her with 'Happy Birthday.' In between, Avril keeps on rocking their world.
Avril's voice is fresh. Her singing at times sounds grand. At the end of 'Take Me Away,' there's a shade of the wailing Sinéad O'Connor. During 'Unwanted,' Avril alternately channels the war crying of Sinéad and The Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan. On 'Naked' Av hits lots of strong, long deep notes that go right through me. For the first time ever on tour, Avril plays piano. For the first time ever as well, Avril does some songs solo, including the final number, 'Slipped Away.' And then she's gone.
